Monday's Headlines - Weekend Box Office

Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War easily took the crown, leading the pack by a wide margin. It scooped up a whopping $210.4m from its first three days, representing about 83% of the week’s total box office. Saturday alone, it narrowly surpassed Furious 8 for the second highest single day gross with $77.55m (based on local currency), only behind Monster Hunt 2.

Other new records include the second highest opening weekend in Chinese history, behind Furious 8, and the highest opening weekend for foreign films in 2018. It will soon deliver a new record for the Avengers franchise when it surges past the second installment within this week.

Two-week champion Us And Them dropped to the second place with $17m for $219.8m after 16 days. Actress-turned-director Rene Liu’s bittersweet romance is now the ninth highest grossing local film ever.

Xu Zheng’s thriller A Or B fell to third place with $7.3m for $58.3m after 16 days, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Rampage hung in with $4.7m for $163.2m after 31 days.

Local comedy I Am Your Mom, starring Yan Ni, opened to coincide with Mother’s Day, earning $4.2m from its first three days; followed by holdovers Baahubali 2: The Conclusion on $3.6m for $11.8m after 10 days and Ready Player One on $1.4m for $232.1m after 45 days from an extended run.

With no major releases in the coming week, Avengers: Infinity War will continue to dominate the box office.
