Tuesday's Headlines - BLACK PANTHER 3rd Film to $700m All Time?
After earning a mere $400 from 27 theaters on Wednesday, August 1 (an average of $27 per theater), Black Panther's domestic total sat at $699,956,432 (via Box Office Mojo). However, between August 2 and August 5, the film took in an estimated $35k, pushing it over the $700m mark.
For comparison's sake the film - avaiable on home video since early May - had made $2501, $25,445 and $13,859 the previous three weekends, respectively. It had not totaled over $33,000 since the weekend of June 22-24.
How did the film jump so significantly while remaining on only those 27 screens, and after five months in theaters? That's not exactly clear - however, Disney seemingly took a similar tactic in bringing its film A Wrinkle In Time across the $100m mark. That film made $1,678,797 during its 15th weekend to go over $100m, after having made just over $100,000 the weekend before. That mark bested the box office disappointment's 6th weekend in release.
Forbes speculates some sort of tactic by Disney could be behind the jump, though the financial trade reports Disney did not respond to its request for comment.
Black Panther's current domestic box office total now sits at an estimated $700,004,026, for an estimated global box office total of $1,346,678,277.
